4   Question about the Functionalities of the smart meter and RF module

4.1   What effect will smart meters and RF devices have on our bills?

With the smart meter and water RF device your bill will always be calculated on an actual reading. You will be billed for exactly what you consume with every bill.

4.2   I produce energy to service my household and feed excess energy on the national grid. Will the smart meter also keep a record and provide me with information regarding my contribution to the national grid?

The meter registers both import and export of energy, therefore it will allow Enemalta PLC to register both what you are consuming and exporting. A second meter will be required in order to monitor what is being generated from any renewable sources on customer premises.

4.3   Do the smart meters offer additional functions such as prepayment?

At the moment this service option is not available. The Utilities will consider the introduction of electricity prepayment at a later stage.

4.4   Do the RF devices offer leakage detection and backflow functionalities?

No, not directly. The water meter cannot distinguish normal flow from leakage. However the data collected can feed software programs at Utilities’ back-office and improve drastically detection of area leakages through a process called ‘water balancing’. The RF device does not offer backflow functionality.

4.5   How does a smart meter address issues like pilferage, inefficiencies and energy theft?

The smart electricity meter is equipped with sensors that will trigger an alarm at Enemalta PLC if it is tampered with. Furthermore, given that the smart meter can be read more frequently (as much as every 15 minutes), the information captured will allow better identification of abnormal consumption which could be the result of electricity pilferage.

4.6   Is it possible to reconcile consumptions within specific zones?

Yes this will be possible once all consumers within a specific zone have smart devices for electricity and water, and once all the information is interfaced with a Geographic Information System.

4.7   Is the new smart meter equipped with an alarm system that will notify me if my system is about to trip?

The meter is equipped with a visual alarm in the form of a message displayed on its LCDs screen. No audible alarm is available.

4.8   Does the meter allow me to see how much energy was consumed in the last week / month (within a defined period of time)?

The meter allows you to visualize the consumption from midnight for the day in question, the consumption of the current billing period, the consumption of the previous billing period as well as the total consumption since installation.
